Start With a Bang
"Well, looks like this sunset is gonna be a bust," I thought to myself. Just a few hours prior, we had arrived on Prince Edward Island. With a gloomy sky, a belly full of seafood and two weeks on the island ahead of us, I almost decided to pack up and leave the fantastic red cliffs of Cavendish to head back to our cottage to get a good night of sleep after two long days in the car. The problem, though, is I’ve never been able to turn my back on a sunset, no matter how bleak the prospect of getting good light looks. And as I stood along the coast with the salty water of the Gulf of St. Lawrence gently lapping at the rocks, it certainly looked bleak. Dense clouds blotted out the sun, and there was no indication that they would part. Still, I stood there. Waiting. Observing. Enjoying being out in such a beautiful place, epic conditions or not. Then, a blinding flash of light broke my state of Zen. What the heck was that? I asked myself, as another flash illuminated the dark sky, and my question was answered. It was lightning. Now, any sane person would see lightning at close range and sprint off to safety. Photographers, however, are far from sane. Early mornings, late nights, sleepless days, endless views, and a dash of danger make us feel alive like nothing else that this beautiful world has to offer. So, when lightning flashed and the clouds began to lift to reveal the warm glow of the setting sun, retreating to the safety of my car was the last thing on my mind. All I was thinking was, "Boy, were you wrong. Bust? This is one of the best sunsets of your life."
