Impending Doom
• A loon couple looks for lunch in a lake ringed by beautiful fall foliage in the Adirondack Mountains. If you look closely you'll see some white around the mouth of each loon, which signals the beginning stages of molting to their winter feathers.
Loon Swoon
• One of my favorite parts of camping with my dad is chatting by the fire, often with a martini in hand, after an exciting day in the woods. While any topic of conversation is enjoyable, some of the most entertaining and memorable stories have been tales from my dad's youth working as a park ranger at Green Lakes State Park in Syracuse, NY.

Green Lake and its neighbor, Round Lake, are both meromictic lakes, which means that their surface and bottom waters don't mix like most lakes do in the fall and spring. The fact that there are only about 20 meromictic lakes in North America makes Green Lake special, and its made even more unique by the fact that it possesses an incredible blue-green color that seems out of place in Upstate NY and more likely to be found in the tropics. This color comes from the high presence of minerals in the water that seeps through the surrounding bedrock and into the lake. Similar to the turquoise-colored glacial lakes that can be found in the Canadian Rockies and other parts of the world, Green Lake shimmers in otherworldly hues when sunlight hits the water. Green Lakes State Park, New York.

Do We Have to Leave?
• Colorful fall foliage surrounds the bare trunk and branches of a birch tree. Adirondack Mountains, New York.
Skeleton Crew
• Winter comes early in the mountains. Although the calendar said there was over two months til it began, the first snow of the season blanketed the summits of the Adirondack High Peaks in early October as fall colors were peaking at lower elevations.
Changing of the Guard
• Peak fall foliage and the beautiful colors of sunrise reflect in Heart Lake. Adirondacks High Peaks, New York.
Heart of the High Peaks II
• Partly cloudy days, when the fall forest seems to glow from the sunlight filtering through the clouds, are perfect for a stroll in the woods. Can you spot the hiker out for a morning walk in this photo?
I Spy
• The motion of fallen leaves swirling in the eddy of a creek was revealed using a multi-second exposure. Even after fall colors are past peak, as the leaves begin to drop new opportunities for photography are created. Adirondack Mountains, New York.
Relativity
• Mountain ridges with fall colors rise above the valley fog at sunrise on a perfect fall morning. This was taken from the deck of a cabin we stayed at in Townsend, Tennessee, and right after taking this shot we hopped into the hot tub and watched as the fog enveloped the mountains. Not a bad way to spend a fine autumn morning!
Soaking it All in
• An interesting cloud formation complements a maple tree showing off its autumn colors on a beautiful October day in West Virginia's Canaan Valley State Park. While not nearly as well known or talked about as places like New England when it comes to fall colors, I think that the West Virginia Highlands put on a fall foliage display that's just as good as what can be seen in other parts of the country, and typically with a fraction of the crowds!
Homestead
• Fall colors dot the rocky landscape in Mumm Basin, high above aquamarine Berg Lake (the vivid turquoise color of the water is due to the presence of rock flour, finely-ground particles of rock formed by glacial erosion, in the lake). On the right, glaciated Mount Robson, the highest mountain in the Canadian Rockies, rises above Berg Lake. To the left, Robson Glacier and Robson Lake form the headwaters of Robson River, a tributary of the Fraser River, which is the longest river in British Columbia. Later on this moody September afternoon, snow would fall on Mumm Basin and the surrounding peaks.
Wildness
• An ephemeral rainbow touches down on a mountain ridge covered in beautiful fall foliage. Blackwater Falls State Park, West Virginia.
Autumn Bow
• Morning fog and beautiful fall foliage added an extra special touch to our morning spent watching elk roam the meadows of Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Do you notice the white mark on the face of this bull elk? That's a battle scar from fighting for its harem.
Purely Carnal
• Fall colors on a small island and the surrounding hillsides on a misty October day in Vermont.
Autumn in Vermont
• Just after sunrise on a late September morning, I awoke at my backcountry campsite to find a beautiful combination of soft light, fall foliage, and morning fog from a rocky lookout. I utilized a long exposure to reveal the motion of the clouds streaking through the sky and the fog ever so slightly rolling over the mountain ridges. Dolly Sods Wilderness, West Virginia.
Mystery of Time
• Fall foliage peppers the coast as fog obscures the distant hills. Acadia National Park, Maine.
Obfuscation
• Beautiful fall colors reflect in a still pond on a misty October morning. Acadia National Park, Maine.
Autumn's Gift
• Chimney Pond, at the base of Maine's Mt. Katahdin, is lined with fragile alpine grasses that turn a beautiful shade of gold in fall. On this September morning, the grasses and I were treated to a colorful sunrise over Maine's highest peak, and the northern terminus of the Appalachian Trail. Baxter State Park, Maine.
King of the East
• Even before my first ever trip to Great Smoky Mountains National Park came to a close, it already had become one of my favorite places. While the mountains and wild rivers were especially beautiful, it was the wildlife viewing opportunities that took the experience to another level. Wild elk used to roam these lands years ago, but before being reintroduced to the park in 2001, eastern elk had been sadly wiped out long ago. Nowadays an early morning visit to Cataloochee Valley feels like stepping back to a time when these beautiful creatures roamed freely in the Appalachian Mountains, and on this misty morning we were delighted to find the herd roaming meadows ringed with beautiful fall foliage. The massive bull elk seen in this photo was the leader of the herd, and we gazed in awe and wonder as he wandered the meadows keeping watch over his harem.
Return to Glory
• Beautiful fall foliage lines the banks of a river in New Hampshire's rugged White Mountains as the sky reflects in a pool carved out of the rocky shore over time.
Eye in the Sky
• Brilliant fall foliage perfectly frames a waterfall in New Hampshire's White Mountains.
Cradled in Color
• Beautiful fall foliage reflects in Heart Lake at sunset. Adirondack Mountains, New York
My Heart is Yours
• Two small islands appear through thick fog and reflect in a still lake on a late-fall morning. Even after the colorful leaves of autumn drop and fade, there's still much beauty to be seen and photographed in the wilderness. Adirondack Mountains, New York.
An Autumn Haunting
• New York State is blessed with many beautiful views and landscapes, with perhaps none more whimsical and seemingly straight from a fairy tale than the waterfalls and gorges of Watkins Glen. Of the many falls and cascades that can be found within Watkins Glen State Park, Rainbow Falls is arguably the most iconic and beautiful, and without a doubt the most popular. I hiked to the falls in the dark and arrived at the crack of dawn, which not only allowed me to have the whole place to myself, but the faint morning light also facilitated the use of a long exposure to render the cascades and water pouring off the mossy ledges to be rendered silky smooth.
Journey to Oz
• Out for a late-fall evening paddle on the placid backwaters of a lake in Upstate NY.
Backwaters
• Beauty surrounds us, if we just take the time to look for it (and appreciate it). I was reminded of this recently on an exceptionally chilly late-fall morning as I was rushing out the door to head to work. En route to my car I passed by a collection of freshly fallen leaves on the sidewalk that were ringed with morning frost. "Work can wait," I thought to myself, and ran back inside to grab my camera and snap the photo seen here. No matter where you live or how busy you are, try as best you can to take even just a single moment each day to seek out and appreciate the beauty that surrounds you.
Beauty Surrounds Us
• Elakala Falls, one of the most elegant waterfalls on the east coast, is especially beautiful in autumn when the rocks surrounding the base of the falls get peppered with fallen leafs. Blackwater Falls State Park, West Virginia.
Feast
• To accentuate the form and motion of the water rushing from the base of the second falls of Shay Run, I used a multi second exposure and placed my camera just a few inches above the water. I spent hours splashing around in the water trying out different compositions at this waterfall. It was a blast :-) Blackwater Falls State Park, West Virginia.
Curve Appeal
• An up close view of the beautiful tiers of the second falls of Shay Run. Blackwater Falls State Park, West Virginia.

Pocketful of Gold
• A fascinating world of intricate details can be found within each and every leaf of a tree, perfectly demonstrated by these rain-covered, freshly fallen maple and aspen leaves. Blackwater Falls State Park, West Virginia.
Over-Under
• Douglas Falls, of West Virginia's Blackwater River, resembles a scene more likely to be found in Utah's red rock country than in Appalachia. The rocks in this section of the river have been stained red due to the past use of coke ovens on the bank of the river. Autumn foliage contrasting against the red rocks makes for a striking photo. Monongahela National Forest, West Virginia.

Red Raider
• Chilly and damp autumn days are perfect for forest hiking and waterfall photography, especially along deserted trails during peak foliage. I came across these picturesque cascades while on a hike in New Hampshire's White Mountains, and spent an hour just sitting next to the falls admiring their beauty before capturing the photo seen here.
Slow it Down
• Fog and foliage is one of the most mesmerizing combinations for photography. As the fog mingled with the precipitous mountains on this autumn morning, I was fortunate to have a flock of geese fly through the mist just as I pressed the shutter, adding a special sense of scale and drama to the already mystical scene.
Fall or Nothing at All
• A pretty deer fawn plays with a stick in the Adirondack Mountains.
Fawning For Fall
• The girls taking in the view from the rocky shore of a crystalline Adirondack lake on a beautiful October afternoon. (Image also available without the hiker and dog).

• Wilderness travel can be one of the most challenging and humbling activities imaginable. With the right skills and attitude, however, there's nothing more rewarding and rejuvenating than disconnecting from the modern world and fully immersing yourself in the wilds. Adirondack Mountains, New York.
Rejuvenation
• Self-portrait from a rocky ledge overlooking pure autumn wilderness in the Adirondack Mountains.
Wide-Eyed Wilderness
• Dappled sunlight and beautiful autumn foliage on a cloudy afternoon in the Adirondack Mountains.
Curtain Call
• A maple tree near Heart Lake in all its autumn glory. An Adirondack Mountain Club volunteer that I met while making this image told me that she knew someone that had been coming to the campground every autumn for 30 years, who used this tree as a gauge for autumn's progress. The gauge was reading "Peak" on this October morning!
The Tree

Symphony of Color
• A beautiful white egret spreads its wings and takes flight as a great blue heron lurks in the marsh grasses below.
Creepin'
• I've always been fascinated by loons. With their unmistakable call and feather pattern and haunting red eyes, they no doubt are an icon of the Adirondack wilderness. While out for an early autumn paddle, we watched two loons repeatedly dive and rise as they often do, when we noticed that one of them seemed to have something in its mouth. Assuming it was just a stick or weeds, I almost didn't even bother lifting my camera. Thank goodness I did, though, because what I saw through the viewfinder was one of the coolest things I've ever seen in the wild. The loon had caught a small catfish , and I was absolutely thrilled to be able to get this shot before the fish became lunch. Do you notice the white around the loons mouth? That's the beginning stages of the loon molting to its winter feathers.

Wander
• Finding a way to spend as much time as possible doing the things that you love, with the people that you love most. That's the key to happiness. There's no one that I would rather adventure with than you (and Maggie, of course), and even with all of the trials that life has thrown at us during our first year of marriage, I can unequivocally say that this has been the greatest year of my life. One down, many more to go :)
