<image:title>90 Minutes</image:title>
<image:caption>After years of longing to explore and photograph White Sands National Park, I finally was able to make a pilgrimage to this otherworldly location in New Mexico, which I decided would make a fitting destination to cap off a month-long winter road trip through the American Southwest. Although I had originally carved out three days to give myself time to fully explore and get to know the sand dunes and mountains of White Sands, Mother Nature had other plans. With an unusually strong winter storm bearing down on the southern states - many of which I would need to drive through to get back home to New York - I made the difficult decision to spend only a brief layover at White Sands before motoring on to hopefully beat the storm home. Although I was disappointed to miss out on witnessing and photographing the dramatic light of sunrise, sunset, and the blue hour on the gypsum sand dunes, I made the most of the 90 minutes that I had by seeking out abstract compositions, largely centered around the yucca plants that dot the sand dunes. In the photograph pictured here, I captured the shadow of a yucca plant cast on the pure white sand of the dunes. Hitting the road back home earlier than anticipated proved to be a wise move as snow and ice ground much of the South to a halt during the days that I originally was supposed to be driving back home. The pull to more comprehensively photograph White Sands has only grown stronger since getting a brief taste of its splendor, and I certainly will be back!</image:caption>

<image:caption>Something that never fails to amaze me whenever I'm on an extended road trip is how seemingly inconsequential events can lead to serendipitous moments that I never thought would be possible. While on a month-long winter road trip through the American Southwest, I was reminded of this on my first day in Arizona, when an unexpected winter storm passed through and made me alter my plans for the day. My initial disappointment quickly dissipated when I found this collection of snowcapped hoodoos near the town of Page, Arizona, and watched in awe as the storm began to dissipate while marveling at the fact that although things rarely go as planned on the road, more often than not, I come away with a feeling that it all was meant to be.</image:caption>

<image:title>Life Finds a Way</image:title>
<image:caption>Zion National Park's Virgin River Narrows is regarded as one of the most fascinating and unique hikes in the world, and for good reason. Almost the entire hike is spent wading in the ankle to waist deep Virgin River, which at certain points is only about 10 feet wide, with the precipitous walls of the canyon rising hundreds of feet above the river. One of the most fascinating things to me about the Narrows was the amount of life that is able to thrive in this cool and dark environment, which barely receives any direct sunlight due to the sheer height of the canyon walls. Pictured here is a lone cottonwood sapling that has managed to take root in a small alcove in the canyon wall.</image:caption>

<image:title>Luna & Lucifer</image:title>
<image:caption>Nature can often be a source of quietude and peaceful serenity, but sometimes its raw and savage power is vividly on display. On days such as this one at Nevada's Great Basin National Park, she displays both personalities. After spending the morning lounging in my hammock, adjusting to the altitude and relaxing after the previous day's 15-hour drive from Badlands National Park, I shouldered my pack to hike up towards some high alpine lakes for sunset. As I was about to leave my campsite, a ranger came up to tell me that they were evacuating the campground, due to a wildfire in the area. I thought he was joking at first, since it was a pristine summer day. He was serious, though, and just like that, my plans changed. I tore down my tent and began the winding drive down the shoulder of Wheeler Peak, thinking about where I would sleep that night and where my next destination would be. Distracted by these thoughts, I had almost forgotten the reason I had to leave the campground, until the road broke free from the forest and I saw a scene unfold before me unlike anything I had ever witnessed. Gigantic clouds of smoke rose from the forested mountainside, glowing orange from the flames below and the sun above, making the otherwise cloudless blue sky barely visible. The power and indifference of the fire was overwhelming, and although I knew I needed to get the hell out of there, I just couldn't look away. I eventually continued the white-knuckle drive down the mountain, keeping one eye on the fire and one on the twisting road. After such an exhilarating experience, the answer to the question "where to next?" was now abundantly clear - nowhere but here. This photo is my favorite from the three days I spent photographing the fire, and was captured at twilight on the first night of the fire when billowing clouds of smoke invaded the starry night sky and the moon hung over Wheeler Peak and silently watched the mountainsides burn.</image:caption>

<image:title>Primal Man</image:title>
<image:caption>Mankind's greatest discovery. That's how my friend Evan and I often refer to fire when gathered around its warm, inviting glow when roaming the wild places of the world. While a campfire in the backcountry has always been an almost holy experience for us, we gained a deeper appreciation for the spiritual power of fire on this night. Watching the light from the flames ignite the alcove we were camping in with the most beautiful shades of orange and red, while our shadows danced on the sandstone walls, it became perfectly clear to me that I had never before felt so connected to early man. I could visualize our caveman predecessors having a night just as we were, reveling in the glory and mystery of fire, with no words spoken, because none needed to be. My friend's shadow towering over him on the cave wall seemed as if it was an ancient ancestor watching over us, having come back to the cave where it once was captivated by the very flames that we will always look into with awe and wonderment.</image:caption>

After a heavy snowfall, the thick, snow covered limbs of this oak tree caught my eye from a distance, but it wasn't until I leaned right against its massive trunk and craned my head back that the full splendor and complexity of the tree revealed itself. The maze of snow covered branches, large and small, seemed simultaneously chaotic and in perfect harmony, just as our own lives can often feel.</image:caption>

On this fall morning in the Adirondacks, I thought that I had budgeted enough time to get to my desired location before sunrise, but as I drove to the trailhead, hints of magenta and purple began to appear in the cloudy sky far earlier than I had anticipated. Fortunately, after 10 minutes of speed walking after I parked, I was able to set up shop just as the vibrant sunrise light began to skim the face of Blue Mountain. Although I got lucky that I wasn't too late for the light show, next time I'll set my alarm 15 minutes earlier to avoid the unnecessary stress and anxiety!</image:caption>

<image:title>Iridescence on Ice</image:title>
<image:caption>When viewed at just the right angle, these bubbles trapped in the frozen surface of a pond demonstrated incredible aqua and magenta coloration via a phenomenon called iridescence. When light hits a bubble, part of it reflects off the front surface, while another part enters the bubble's soapy film and reflects off the back surface. Depending on the viewing angle and the thickness of the bubble, different colors will be visible at different viewpoints due to the interactions between the reflected light. While I was photographing these bubbles, it was fascinating to experience this firsthand, and if I moved just a few inches to either side, the colorful iridescence captured here vanished entirely.</image:caption>

<image:caption>I've always been fascinated by the intricate and abstract world of ice during the winter months, and one of the most intriguing findings I've ever had was a collection of bubbles trapped in the frozen surface of a local pond. When I zoomed in on the selection of bubbles captured here, my brain ran wild as I processed the various shapes and attempted to determine what they looked like, similar to staring up at the clouds and seeing animals and faces. I settled on what I imagine the "primordial soup" - a hypothetical liquid that existed on Earth billions of years ago that was rich in organic compounds and favorable for the emergence of life - looked like, albeit frozen.</image:caption>

<image:title>Ecstasy</image:title>
<image:caption>One of my personal favorite photography subjects is the gnarled and hardy evergreens that occupy tree line and the beginning of the alpine zone of the Adirondack High Peaks, especially when they become covered with snow in the depths of winter. After climbing the surprisingly deserted trail to the summit of Cascade Mountain, I was greeted with a windchill that approached -30 degrees Fahrenheit, and a fantasyland of pure winter magic unlike anything I had seen before. The challenging weather conditions only added to the experience and made it that much more memorable, and as the sun dipped below the distant mountains and the most intense post-sunset glow I've ever witnessed emanated through the sky, I raced around like a madman capturing as many photos as I could. After the sky shifted from orange, to pink, to blue, to black, I began my descent down the dark and lonely trail, reveling in the feeling of pure ecstasy that only comes from the wilderness and doing what you love most in the world.</image:caption>

<image:title>Time Stood Still</image:title>
<image:caption>There are moments in life when time seems to stand still. When all the outside noise slips away and the mind, body, and spirit are focused entirely on the moment at hand. For me, nature is where I go to seek these moments. Whether it's been a stunning sunset along the ocean, a rewarding winter view after a punishing climb, or hearing the haunting call of a loon echo across a foggy lake, I've been fortunate to experience countless moments where nature has taken my breath away and made time stand still. But out of all these moments, there's one that stands out from the rest.
On a trip to Great Smoky Mountains National Park, we were dying to see black bears in the wild. After a couple days of exploration with no sightings, we were rewarded with what likely was the greatest experience we've ever had in the wilds. A mama bear and her three cubs were hanging out at the base of a walnut tree, which itself was exhilarating to see. But then the cubs got restless, and began to climb the walnut tree. We stood awestruck as they deftly scaled the thin branches that swayed in the evening breeze, and I could feel my heart pounding so much with excitement that it felt like it would burst. This was one of those rare moments that caused me to ask aloud "is this real?" because it's unlike anything that my eyes had seen before. This was indeed real, and was a moment we'll never forget.

<image:title>Three's Company</image:title>
<image:caption>A bald eagle swoops in to join two of its friends atop a sand dune in Canada's Prince Edward Island National Park. When most people think of a bald eagle, they picture a classic bright white head and tail with a dark brown body, which is the bald eagle's adult plumage. It typically takes about five years for a bald eagle to reach this state, though, and as bald eagles mature, they incrementally morph from having all brown feathers to their more regal adult state. One of the reasons I find this photo so interesting is that it captures several of the stages of bald eagle maturation. The bird in the center is the youngest of the three and has a completely brown head with blotchy brown and white feathers. I like to refer to this stage as the "dirty bird" stage of an eagle's maturation. The bird that's in flight is closer to adulthood, but some white feathers can still be found on its chest, indicating that it's still a year or two away from full maturity. The bald eagle all the way to the right is the closest out of the three pictured here to adulthood, with a fully white tail and dark brown body, with just a hint of brown remaining on its head to indicate that it has just a bit more growth to go before it reaches adulthood.</image:caption>

<image:title>A Lifetime of Discovery</image:title>
<image:caption>On the final evening of an unforgettable week exploring Arches National Park and the greater Moab area, my dad and I took one last ride into the park for sunset. Having driven every inch of the park road several times over in the previous days, I was beginning to think that I had already learned all the secrets that Arches had to reveal. As we nonchalantly cruised through the park with the breeze in our hair and sun on our skin, I was more focused on enjoying a final joyride in the Mustang convertible that had been our trusty steed all week than finding something new to photograph. I was quickly reminded, though, that in places as magical as Arches, there's always more to discover, and that 100 lifetimes would never be enough to truly see and appreciate all that Arches has to offer. As we motored down the road, a line of vibrant, freshly bloomed cottonwood trees that I somehow hadn't noticed before caught my eye, and I decided to pull over to check things out. Once I stepped out of the car and surveyed the scene, though, it wasn't the cottonwoods that grabbed my attention. It was the clutch of yellow wildflowers - the first such flowers we had seen all week - just off the road that held my gaze. I was so giddy about the flowers that at first, I didn't even notice that right in front of the flowers was a group of prickly pear cactus. Wildflowers, cacti, lush spring cottonwoods, sandstone towers, and a gorgeous sunset? Talk about saving the best for last! As my dad and I savored the moment while my camera clicked away, we talked about how serendipitous this parting gift from Arches was. As we chatted and savored a final sunset in our new favorite place, I began to wonder - what other yet to be discovered treasures are out there tucked between the arches and buttes? We'll just have to go back to find out.</image:caption>

<image:title>Father Time</image:title>
<image:caption>The hardy, gnarled, and beautiful bristlecone pines found in the White Mountains of California are the oldest known living non-clonal trees in the world, with the oldest identified one being over 5,000 years old. Over the course of a week of exploring the Ancient Bristlecone Pine Forest, I found myself returning time and again to this particular tree. I was fascinated by its twisting, barkless limbs, and the fact that only a small portion of the tree was still technically alive. You don't live for thousands of years without being a master of survival, and one of the ways in which these trees are able to live so long is their sectored architecture. Each root section feeds only the part of the tree directly above it, and as one root dies off due to exposure through soil erosion, only the sector of tree above that root dies. In the tree shown in this photograph under a brilliant sunset sky, the right side has succumbed to exposure and erosion, while the upper left reaches are still clinging to life.</image:caption>

An Adirondack Mountain Club volunteer that I met while making this image told me that she knew someone that had been coming to the campground every autumn for 30 years, who used this tree as a gauge for autumn's progress. The gauge was reading "Peak" on this October morning!</image:caption>

If, like me, you've been led to believe that Kansas is a flat, featureless expanse of Midwestern plains, I highly encourage you to go discover the many natural wonders that this incredibly underrated state has to offer. Monument Rocks, which are chalk formations that rise up from the surrounding prairie as if they were transported from a different world, was my final stop for photography as I drove back home after an incredible two weeks of photographing peak autumn colors in Southwestern Colorado, and even though I only spent one evening at Monument Rocks, it was an absolute highlight of my trip. </image:caption>
