Worth the Wait

Alabama Hills, California

Mount Whitney is many things. It's the southern terminus of the John Muir Trail, it's the highest mountain in the contiguous United States at 14,505 feet, and it's an alpine playground that pulls climbers, mountaineers, adventurers, and artists to its serrated spires. For me, it also proved to be something else over the years - elusive. Although I had been ever so close to it on numerous previous road trips, I had never fully experienced Mt. Whitney before finally doing a winter trip with two of my best friends to Alabama Hills, where we slept in a van in the shadow of the High Sierra, reminisced about past adventures and those yet to come around the campfire, and did our best to prove that no matter how many years pass between trips, whenever we're together, it's as if no time has passed at all. Each morning during our stay at Alabama Hills, I would rise early and roll out of the van while my friends still slumbered, set up my tripod and camera, and capture the first light of the day casting its warm glow on the mountain that I once thought would forever elude me.
